InTempo Software’s Jack Shea Selected for the American Rental Association Rental Hall of Fame

The American Rental Association has announced the 2020 inductees for the ARA Rental Hall of Fame, selecting InTempo Software’s own John “Jack” Shea for inclusion.

A 45-year industry veteran, Shea was responsible for operations at Taylor Rental’s company-owned stores when he noticed a crucial opportunity to incorporate software and analytics in rental store management. Leading the industry’s first digital transformation, he founded Solutions by Computer (SBC) in 1982.

The approach was initially met with skepticism, but quickly proved its importance. Shea’s solutions were adopted by 625 franchised Taylor Rental Centers, paving the way for future developments.

“Shea was truly instrumental in transforming the rental industry,” commented Matt Hopp, General Manager of InTempo Software. “He laid the foundation for the mission we carry on today: providing rental owners with the technology they need to make smarter, data-driven decisions.”

Shea’s first software solution, Taylor Owners Program of Information and Control (TOPIC), provided advanced analytics to improve decision-making in the rental business. TOPIC was soon followed by Counter Pro software, which helped owners write and process transactions while collecting data that proactively prevented problems with their operations.

A true visionary, Shea was one of the first figures in the rental industry to talk about the importance of realizing returns above the cost of capital and documenting the financial performance of rental assets. This vision deeply aligned with the values of Constellation Software, who acquired SBC in 2008. In 2015, the company joined forces with a portion of Wynne Systems, also owned by Constellation, to form InTempo Software.

About the ARA Rental Hall of Fame

ARA created the Rental Hall of Fame in 2000 to foster an appreciation of the historical development of the equipment and event rental industry and the leaders who helped the industry grow and expand. Each year, nominations are accepted to recognize individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the industry. The five inductees this year include: Don Ahern, Michael Kneeland, Edward Latek, Timothy Maloney Sr., CERP, and John ‘Jack’ Shea.
